Shabbat Blog

Each day in our Daily newspaper, we discuss the Middah (value) of the Week. This week’s middah was friendship (yedidut). What a great topic of conversation since friendship is such an important part of the camp experience.

My favorite discussion point in the Daily this week was:

A friend isn’t just someone you like. A friend is someone who makes you a better person. Are you a friend to someone? How do you make her/him a better person?

How true this is, but easy to sometimes forget.

Campers and staff are nominated to light candles with me during our Shabbat services on Friday night because they have demonstrated the Middah of the Week. This week, several campers were chosen to light the candles. This week, there were so many great reasons people wrote for why they were nominating others for this honor. Just to name a few:

“She is super supportive…she is always smiling…she is always ready to help anyone anytime anywhere…she is always willing to lend a helping hand…she can be counted on all the time…she is very inclusive….she makes an effort to be a great friend to everyone….she is a role model when it comes to friendship…she puts a smile on everyone’s face….she is loyal and dependable….when people are sad, she comforts them.”

And my all-time favorite quote:

“If you let her into your life, you would never let her go. And that is what you call a real friend!”

Take some time during this Shabbat to think of your friends. Have you told them lately how much they mean to you, how they have made you a better person? There’s no time like the present to reach out…..

Shabbat Shalom!
