Our Middah of the Week program continues this week with the middah (value) of patience (savlanut). Each day, we distribute the Daily – our newspaper that talks about all of the goings-on at camp. One of the featured sections of the Daily is our middah announcement. Each week, we focus on a different middah and throughout the week, we talk about ways that we can demonstrate the middah. Some of my favorite discussion points about patience this week were:
Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.
Just because something isn’t happening for you right now doesn’t mean that it will never happen.
During the week, campers and staff nominate people to light candles with me during our Shabbat services on Friday night because they have demonstrated the Middah of the Week. This week, the people who were chosen to light the candles proudly stood with me in Solarium as we lit the Shabbat candles together.
Some of the reasons these people were nominated to light the candles with me include:
Waiting patiently for a friend at the Health Center
Letting people have canteen first
Always a great friend to others
Helping campers fall asleep at night
Cheerfully picking out chicken bones from the compost bucket
Happily waiting for her turn during meals and activities
Helping to pick up trash – with a smile
Supportive and patient with bunkmates
After our service, the nominees lit a torch with the flame of the candles from Solarium. They then carried the torch with them, leading the entire camp to dinner. As they entered the Dining Hall, they lit the candelabra with the light from our Shabbat candles. We enjoyed a great Shabbat dinner and ended the meal with Birkat and Days Pass (a camp favorite) as the candles continued to glow.
Another Shabbat at camp is here – one of my favorite times of the week. It’s a time when we can take a step back and reflect on the amazing week we have had. Wishing you a peaceful and reflective Shabbat filled with patience.
No camp birthdays today – which always baffles me. In a camp so big, how are there no bdays today?!
