beST friendThe Airy Dance!

The whole camp headed over to Camp Airy tonight for the first dance of the summer. Junior Camp arrived first and the DJ played games with them and the balloon artists created fun hats, animals and designs. Then, the next shift of campers arrived – Senior Camp. While these 7th, 8th and 9th graders ran down to the gym for the dance, the trainees prepared themselves for their entrance. The Louise CAs (counselor assistants, rising 11th graders) were all dressed up in their vaCAtion attire and the Louise CITs (counselors-in-training, rising 12th graders) wore their traditional overalls.

I spent some time with the STs (senior trainees, rising 10th graders) as they came running down the hill with their beST friend outfits and signs. These costumes are all a part of the underground packing lists that the trainees put together. The STs were in small groups with signs stating: My name is ______ and my beST friend is _________ .

There were great pairs and trios of beST friends – Pooh, Tigger and Piglet (in the picture), Jim and Dwight from The Office, Thing 1 and Thing 2, Luigi and Mario, 3 Blind Mice, Sebastian, Flounder and Ariel, Grey and Yang, even the 7 Dwarves, and so many more!

The STs shared with me how great their summer is going so far. They love all of the special theme nights, like tonight. It’s like a rite of passage for them. One of the STs said she has been waiting for this night to dress up since she was a camper in Unit A MANY years ago!

They love all of the bonding activities their counselors have planned for them. They told me that they were definitely very worried at first since the trainees cannot make bunk requests, but they feel that this is actually what has pulled everyone together. They said that it feels like one big bunk. Even their count-off is in a big group of 39!

To sum it all up, one ST even said that they can’t remember who is in what bunk because they are always all together – the STs and the counselors! This comment got a lot of head nods from the rest of the group. I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Five days in and the STs can’t wait to see what else is in store for them this summer…….
