Terrace at 25

Tonight was our big musical production of the session. In speaking to the Drama Department Head Lesley and our Department Head Coordinator JRC, they shared with me a little about their vision for this year’s production.

Terrace Theater was built in 1990. This year marks the theater’s 25th anniversary. Lesley and JRC wanted to celebrate this milestone. The drama staff reflected on the past 25 years and they chose musical numbers from the 50 shows that have been performed in Terrace.

The very large multi-aged cast of 43 campers sang songs from: Annie, Annie Get Your Gun, Anything Goes, Chorus Line, Grease, King and I, Peter Pan, Pippin, Smokey Joe’s Café, The Wiz, and Willy Wonka.  The opening number was a special performance of the very first show performed in Terrace in 1990 – 42nd Street. We even had some of the original cast back to perform – tap dancing and all! This year’s drama department closed the show with “So Long, Farewell” from The Sound of Music.  Between the numbers, clips were shown of some of the original shows in Terrace throughout the past 25 years – a definite walk down Memory Lane!

The show essentially is a backstage view of Terrace, talking about what life is like behind the scenes. The script that was written by JRC goes on to explain what it would be like if Terrace was demolished and what that would mean to camp. The graffiti backstage would disappear, but we would all hold onto the history forever – whether we performed on stage or we sat in the audience. We would all be a part of Terrace….always!
