SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN

It’s showtime! We are so fortunate to have drama specialist Michelle Ray direct a group of 36 camper actors and 14 crew (of various ages in Units A-F) to put on our big theater production – Singin’ in the Rain. Michelle has been a longtime camp parent and last year joined our staff, and we are so thrilled to welcome her back for year #2!

I had a chance to chat with Michelle about camp, the show, and life in general. Michelle studied at Tufts University and she has been directing for 29 years. In addition to her job as a teacher in Montgomery County, she also directs shows at her school too.

Michelle wants our campers to have fun and work together to create a theatrical experience for camp to enjoy. For kids who have theater experience, she wants to give them new parts and enhance their skills. For kids who have never done theater before, it’s a good taste to see if they like it and want to pursue it more at home. She has been so impressed with her cast and crew, telling me how they work so well as a team.

I asked Michelle about her choice of show this year. She is hoping that by picking a classic old movie turned into a show that maybe some kids will go home and want to watch it with their families. So parents, find it on Neflix or dust off the ‘ole VCR!

Michelle is always so happy around camp. She is literally a ray of sunshine! Michelle told me that, “Camp is so full of joy and opportunity. Being in an all girls environment makes for such a different experience. Being at camp is simply magical.”

We could learn a lot from the lyrics of the popular song from Singin’ in the Rain, so break out your umbrella and rain boots and start singin’…

Alicia

I’m singin’ in the rain
Just singin’ in the rain
What a glorious feeling
I’m happy again
I’m laughin’ at clouds
So dark up above
The sun’s in my heart
And I’m ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I’ve a smile on my face
I’ll walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin’
Singin’ in the rain

UNIT SPOTLIGHT – Unit A

Today Unit A got to spend some time with everyone’s favorite camp visitor: the Chocolate Lady! Not only did the campers get a chance to make some very creative chocolate creations, but they also got to learn a little bit about chocolate’s history and it’s use today! Did you know that most dark chocolate that’s sold today isn’t real chocolate? Luckily, the Chocolate Lady had some genuine dark chocolate for us to try. Surprisingly, most girls who said that they enjoy milk chocolate the most actually liked the dark chocolate best! We also learned how chocolate was originally made and when sugar was first added to it! After, girls got a chance to pick from the three kinds of chocolate – white, milk, and dark- and make a mini chocolate pizza! Of course complete with all the necessary toppings: gummy bears, marshmallows, sprinkles, and even some other candies like M&Ms. It was a huge hit!!Morgan – Unit A Unit Leader
